Measuring Resilience: A new study examines the metrics for assessing a community’s ability to bounce back from disaster

A new study was recently done to examine community resilience over a period of time after a disaster has occurred, and the current methods used to determine that resilience. Retired Illinois State Water Survey engineer Sally McConkey and professor of natural resources and environmental sciences at the University of Illinois hoped to identify gaps in current assessment approaches.

“Many qualities appear to indicate resilience, but the relative importance of each factor is as yet unknown,” McConkey told Illinois News Bureau life sciences editor Diana Yates. “These qualities may be categorized under the domains of social, economic, institutional, infrastructure, community capital and environment.”

The study looked at top down assessments such as The Baseline Resilience Indicator for Communities and bottom up assessments driven by the community and concluded that both of these methods have challenges in terms of data restraints and resources.
