Making the Grade: Canada intends to evaluate companies’ levels of cyber resilience with letter grades

With cyberattacks being a constant threat to critical infrastructure, the government of Canada is partnering with cybersecurity ratings firm SecurityScorecard to help identify which sectors may be at greatest risk.  This effort will include using the letter grades produced by SecurityScorecard for individual companies and organizations to evaluate where the greatest economic risks related to cyber resilience exist, and to provide the Canadian government with a better understanding as to how these grades are assembled, and what can be done to improve them for critical infrastructure provides.

Says Sachin Bansal, chief business office for SecurityScorecard, of the usefulness of the grades to the federal government, “It’s giving them real-time, continuous visibility into critical infrastructure.”

The move by Canada’s government follows a push by the government of the United States to investigate a similar grading system, as raised in September of 2023 by Anne Neuberger, deputy national security advisor for cyber and emerging technology.
