Making a Connection: The integration of AI and Smart devices could help in the aftermath of a disaster

A recent project launched by researchers at the University of Central Florida is looking to investigate how artificial intelligence could be used to process data from Smart devices to provide better and more focused information to emergency managers during and after a natural disaster, according to GCN. Funded by a $1.2 million grant from the NSF, the study will be conducted over a three year period, and will use data from smart devices like traffic monitoring streetlights or sensors tracking water levels to assemble a more complete understanding of the current and projected conditions within the study’s area. Expected outputs from the study will also include a platform to allow for more rapid sharing of data among emergency personnel and local officials.

“The research design assessing resilience changes will help decision makers in governments, businesses and nonprofits obtain a deeper understanding of how AI-aided information technologies can advance collective decision making to reduce community vulnerability and enhance resilience,” Yue ‘Gurt’ Ge, an assistant professor in UCF’s School of Public Administration and principal investigator of the project, told GCN.
