Maintaining Infrastructure: A call for made for critical infrastructure organizations to improve their cybersecurity standards

The recent compromising of the Colonial Pipeline by hackers has drawn further attention to the importance of proper cybersecurity approaches for companies or organizations handling critical infrastructure. With ransomware forcing Colonial to fully shut down the pipeline to protect the malicious software from reaching other systems, major disruptions were observed throughout parts of the US as industries and consumers were affected.

In response to these disruptions, as well as potential threats to other key infrastructure, calls are growing for both the expansion and enforcement of minimum standards for cyber security compliance, according to an article in Next Web. Within the United States, the federal government issued an executive order proposing the modernization of cyber security standards and increased reporting requirements. At the same time, the order also called for an independent Cyber Safety Review Board, capable of analyzing and reporting on critical cyber security incidents.

With cyber attacks up notably during the pandemic, and ransomware remaining a common threat, key infrastructure will need to have cyber defenses hardened to prevent regular repeats of recent events.
