While focused around the needs of lawyers, Above the Law’s David Lat has offered a set of seven recommendations for cybersecurity best practices, extracted from recent panels at the ABA TECHSHOW conference:
- Make Cybersecurity a priority – if you’re not considering it, it’s only a matter of time before hackers will force you to.
- Backups – ensure regular backups are performed, ideally offsite, to protect files in event of a physical disaster or remote attack.
- Two-Factor Identification – add an extra layer of security to online accounts.
- Password Managers – look at using a password manager to ensure unique passwords for all accounts.
- Encryption – to assist in protecting client privacy and confidentiality, check up on options for encryptions of files, phone calls, and text messages.
- Education – ensure colleagues are also aware of their cybersecurity needs and options, to protect against weak links in security.
- Perfection – your security will never reach this, but recognize that even simple changes can do a lot to protect you and your clients.
In addition to these tips, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has also issued a notification about two critical security flaws identified in the commonly installed Apple Quick Time for Windows. As a result, users are recommended to uninstall the software, as Apple will no longer be issuing updates or patches.
