Learning Your Lesson: What we can take away from high-profile business continuity failures

While new problems do crop up every now and then, most of the challenges any company is likely to face in managing business continuity are ones which other organizations have already faced, often with success, but occasionally with great disaster. As these successes often don’t make the news, it’s these better publicized failures from which we can all learn.

Writing for TechTarget.com, virtualization expert Stuart Burns points out four specific examples of these failures, and what could and should be done differently to ensure your company doesn’t face similar failures. In particular, Burns looks at:

  • The FAA system failure from January 2023, driven by challenges in supporting and testing legacy systems.
  • The Microsoft Azure outage from early 2023, caused by an improper change made to their routing infrastructure.
  • The OVHCloud fire in 2021, that demonstrated weaknesses in both their fire suppression system and their data backup redundancy.
  • The 2022 ransomware breach on the NHS Foundation Trust, which revealed shadow IT system outside of professional IT oversight.
