Learning from Experience: Taking stock of the damage caused by monsoons and flash flooding in recent years, Goa has revamped its disaster response approach

Having been hit hard by monsoons and flash flooding in recent years, the state of Goa in India has sought to learn from the previous response, and revamp its strategy for responding to natural disasters.  This revamp not only includes an update of the guidelines, but also the inclusion of a detailed response plan that clearly spells out key responsibilities.

Additional efforts have also been made towards providing extra information to those living within the state, and support during a disaster – the state has already mapped areas that are more vulnerable to landslides and flooding, and has also activated local disaster managements cells and controls rooms from which to help coordinate disaster response.  Furthermore, multiple cyclone relief shelters have been completed, with more under construction.  Between these actions, and the formation of teams for rescue operations, the provision of medical aid, food, and shelter, and the restoration of power, it is thought the region should be much better prepared in the event of another natural disaster.
