Keep in Touch: What mistakes are commonly made in business continuity communications?

When putting together a business continuity plan, it’s important to remember that plan is worthless unless it’s properly communicated to those who need to use and respond to it. Once it’s put into action in the event of a disaster, any gap in this communication can render it worthless, so be sure not to make these mistakes, as identified by an article in Security Magazine, in its application:

  • Assuming employees are ready and prepared to deploy the plan, when needed – it’s not uncommon for people to not be familiar with their duties when rare events occur, but regular training and reminders can help reduce this risk
  • Thinking everyone can be reachable by text message – relying on a single method of communication can leave individuals out of the loop, or even the entire company, in the event of a service disruption
  • Thinking only of the customers – while it’s good to keep your customers and business partners up to date on your response, it may be even more critical to notify employees or the wider community as to your actions and status.
  • Trusting the plan will go smoothly – be prepared for things to go wrong, and ensure you’ve got multiple robust methods for business continuity communications, so that you don’t find yourself without a means of keeping people up to date.
