Isolated IT: In the event your IT team is under quarantine, can your organization maintain continuity

In addition of the health threats imposed by the coronavirus, companies are also facing potential disruptions, posed by the possibility of their overseas teams being quarantined in the event of exposure, according to an article on Dark Reading. Says Edward Minyard, senior consultant at IP Architects, of the risks posed to a company by exposure, “If you’ve got 200 workers working in one place and one of them presents themselves with the illness, it’s pretty likely the government is going to quarantine everybody. And the current [quarantine] protocol is for 14 days. So that can have a material impact on folks’ planning.”

The impact on IT security teams could be even more severe, with such organizations often already being short-staffed. Says Minyard, “This is not speculation. This is going on, and we don’t know how bad it’s going to be. Should you have all your eggs in one basket … I’d be thinking of a different plan.”

With IT security potentially reduced, the threat of attacks being missed also grows. With the coronavirus active, phishing attacks using it as a topic have appeared, with the most notable using the CDC’s logo and display address to try and steal credentials to Office 365. Other attacks have attempted to use tips for virus prevention as a hook.
