International Security

Looking to minimize the risk of cyberthreats to the nation’s networks, Canada is conducting a national security analysis, including of equipment made by foreign telecommunications companies. This analysis is expected to include equipment from Huawei, which has already been banned from participating in new cellular networks in the United States and Australia.

Having been involved in recent discussions with Australia, which banned both Huawei and ZTE from involvement in their 5G network on national security grounds, Canada’s Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale told the Globe and Mail, “We had the opportunity to hear from Australia in terms of its decision and the decision-making process that is under way in a great many countries. That was useful information from Canada’s point of view, and we are making sure we have the analysis and ultimately the set of decisions that will keep Canadians safe.”

Concerns regarding Huawei and other Chinese companies have been prompted by a Chinese law stating companies must “support, co-operate with and collaborate in national intelligence work.” In response to this law, security experts in both Canada and the United States have warned that the Chinese government could force these firms to compromise their equipment.
