International Action: The current war in Ukraine increases the risks to cybersecurity worldwide

With events in Ukraine filling the news, Russian-linked international cyberattacks on both critical infrastructure and private industry are posing disruptive threats all around the world. With many Americans still working from home, where their cybersecurity might be less robust than those working in the office, it’s important to recognize that any vulnerable point of access can be the target for an attack. Whether that cyberattack is intended to get into your company’s networks or your personal files, it’s best to do what you can to make sure your defenses are in the best shape they can reasonably be.

To help ensure you’re ready, consider looking to the recommendations of the experts.  Within the UK, the National Cyber Security Centre has released a list of actions that can be taken to help build resilience against cyberattacks.  While not a comprehensive list, many of the items suggested are relatively simple to adopt or roll out for companies, and include:

  • Keeping up to date with patches
  • Enforcing strong passwords and multi-factor authorization
  • Keeping (and testing) regular backups for your networks
  • Teaching cybersecurity awareness to all employees (particularly with respect to phishing)
  • Preparing (and regularly updating) an incident response plan

Also, be sure to recognize that threats can come from anywhere.  Says Lindy Cameron, CEO of the NCSC, “Cyberattacks do not respect geographic boundaries.”
