Internal Awareness

Working to ensure the city’s readiness for both large public events and emergencies, Boston’s Department of Innovation and Technology (DoIT) and the Boston Office of Emergency Management (OEM) have announced a new situation awareness tool. Intended to assist in coordinating operations and improving public safety, this map-based tool was built in house.

Developed by the city’s geographic information system (GIS) team, the first iteration was released in 2015, and used on that year’s St. Patrick Day parade. Updates have continued since then, to add features and improvements, based on feedback and requests.

Observed Mayor Martin J. Walsh “By building our own situational awareness tool, the City of Boston is better equipped to ensure our residents’ and visitors’ safety, and I’m pleased that we will continue to refine our public safety tools.”
