Hurricane Preparedness And Recovery Tips: How To Keep Businesses Running

Hurricane season is upon us again, and businesses in areas likely to be affected are investigating how to best ensure their robustness in the face of winds and water. This robustness can take different approaches, and involving considerations of how to respond both before and after any storm. Risk Management Monitor and Biz Journals offer tips for these scenarios.

For before the event, organizations should:

  • Establish accurate records of assets, valuations, and replacement costs for critical items
  • Assemble a detailed disaster recovery and business continuity plan
  • Create backups of critical data and store them in secure locations to prevent loss or damage
  • Prepare reliable methods for communication with company personnel, customers, and business partners

After a storm has passed, a company should:

  • Reestablish contact with stakeholders, to confirm any remaining safety concerns
  • Regain access to company sites, and determine whether the sites are ready to resume normal operations, or whether it may be preferable to move resources offsite
  • Review disaster recovery and business continuity plans, and update them to reflect new conditions or identified gaps
  • Document all damage to company sites or equipment and notify insurance agents or brokers as needed

While the above may not prevent damage to sites, it can help to minimize the effects of any storm, and assist in rapidly restoring a business to normal operation after an extreme weather event, and to prepare for the next one.
