How To Hack a Hack

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently released a report with some tips to healthcare institutions about ransomware, and the implications are transmittable to every industry.

The report covers entities covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and requirements for providers to follow a HIPAA Security Rule specifically targeted at ransomware.

For those in other industries, an article in Hedgeweek covers off how to recover from a ransomware attack. “The scary thing with ransomware is that it doesn’t just infect one person’s PC, it can infiltrate the entire network, including servers. Unless you have the encryption key you won’t be able to unencrypt the files,” Carrie Reber, vice president of marketing at backup provider company Datto told Hedgeweek. The article advises the implementation of automatic backups and perimeter defense through antivirus programs.
