Home Security: During the COVID-19 lockdowns, more than half of organizations experienced security incidents related to remote work

A recent report from Tessian, titled “Securing the Future of Hybrid Working” has indicated that roughly half of all organizations have experienced a security incident associated with remote working since the start of the lockdowns associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, according to an article in CPO Magazine. Phishing remained the most common type of attack, with the reliance on email while out of office making it a desirable target for cyber criminals. Among those working remotely, 78% reported having received at least one phishing email during the affected period.

Despite the increase in cybersecurity threats associated with remote work, 75% of key IT decision makers still believe that hybrid or remote working remains the future of the workplace, even though 85% of that same group also believes remote and hybrid work will increase the number of cyber incidents.

“While remote working was an option for some employees pre-pandemic, and while some companies are more familiar with flexible working arrangements, not all employees got to experience it because of scheduling and business demands which meant they still needed to physically be in the office,” says Tim Sadler, CEO and co-founder of Tessian. “Now, the majority of office workers are working from home. And it’s going to be hard for businesses to justify why their workers need to come into the office every day of the week, post-pandemic.”

Sadler also observes that to reduce the amount of incidents associated with remote working “An important first step is educating people the threats they could face and providing training on safe remote working behaviors — something nearly a third of companies said they did not do at the start of the lockdown period this year.”
