With Black Friday arriving, retailers are thinking about the money that should be coming in over the next month. They’re not alone, as cybercriminals are also thinking about these funds, and how to best get their hands on them. With online shopping already extremely popular, and only expected to grow as shoppers elect to buy from home in response to the pandemic, retailers with online presences need to stay aware of these common threats to their security, according to an article in TechRound:
- Magecart or e-skimming, in which malware is used to capture personal or payment information from shoppers, either via fake offers directing shoppers to a malicious site, or infecting a legitimate site
- Weaknesses in third-party vendors, as outside organizations may not be as aggressive about updating or maintaining their software against threats
- Failure to update or patch open source software, as the identification of new vulnerabilities can result in easy exploits for criminals for less fastidious organizations
