Hit List

As companies work to protect their critical systems and date, hackers continue to strive to defeat those new technologies and techniques, resulting in a constant back-and-forth between the opposing sides. While frequent news of breaches may make it seem like hackers have the upper hand, businesses can benefit by focusing on their defenses against key types of attacks. Writing for Tech Republic, multiplatform reporter Macy Bayern lists five key concerns for cybersecurity professionals, as identified in a recent survey from AlienVault:

  1. Phishing: 55 per cent of respondents to AlienVault’s survey listed this as the greatest risk to their company’s security, with its reliance on human error and lack of education making it an attractive line of attack.
  2. Ransomware: Continued high profile incidents of companies losing data or services to ransomware attacks make it clear that the threat is not going away.
  3. Cloud threat: Whether they are attacks on cloud-based services, or use of cloud-based services as a means of attack, we’re still learning the limits of what can be achieved with these tools.
  4. GDPR: The new legislation greatly ups the stakes for companies to ensure their compliance and protection of data, for both business and public relations reasons.
  5. Coin mining: Rather than targeting data, attacks are aiming at accessing computing power for cryptocurrency profits, while offloading the costs to the businesses.
