Hiding in Plain Sight: A list of simple and common threats that can result in data leakage or loss

While zero-day vulnerabilities or new malware attacks lead the news, older and simpler techniques remain big threats to organizations and individuals looking to maintain a strong cybersecurity defense. Writing for Wired, tech and science writer David Nield offers up a list of seven common but less glamorous threats to security, which can nevertheless result in hacks, data loss, or breaches of personal information:

USB sticks containing malicious software;
Forgotten personal accounts for apps or services no longer actively used;
Browser extensions which have been improperly secured or which include unwanted functionalities;
Fake online quizzes designed to harvest personal information;
Photo services which retain location data;
Poorly or unsecured smart home devices, which can allow physical or remote access; and
Knockoff charging cables and connectors, designed to allow for remote access.

Not nearly as well publicized as the latest viruses, all of these threats can provide enough information to cybercriminals to hack into protected accounts or devices, according to Wired, and should be considered by both individuals and organizations when developing their security strategies.
