Guessing the Future: Efforts need to be made to predict the direction of future cyber attacks

Sometimes, the best defense is a good offense. For cybersecurity, which has been built around the concept that the best defense is, in fact, a good defense, a shift to more proactive approaches may be long overdue. In this case, that proactive approach can take the form of emphasizing prediction, detection, and response, rather than focusing only on prevention, writes Dashveenjit Kaur for TechHQ.com. This shift in approach encourages action since, writes Kaur, “The epitome of cybersecurity maturity comes with anticipation because reliance on reactive security alone can leave one exposed.”

Whether via enhanced training and education, involvement of all members of an organization in cybersecurity rather than only the IT team, or regularly reexamining the state of regulatory compliance, actions to encourage engagement in security can help to suppress and limit attacks. As noted by the Economist Intelligence Unit, companies with a proactive security strategy see reduced growth of cyberattacks compared to those without.
