In Carpinteria, California, when it rains, it floods, and when it floods, crisis often ensues. The coastal town is somewhat geographically isolated, meaning during an emergency – such as last year’s January flooding that shut down its freeway – its inhabitants can be cut off from supplies and crucial support.
Enter Girls Inc. Though primarily a program that inspires young girls with STEM courses, the group has expanded its operations to include emergency services. After noticing a rise in climate-related disasters, the organization declared a need for an emergency hub and committed to operating as a community evacuation center during crises.
Edison International, a Girls Inc. partner for nearly 12 years, has created a new disaster preparedness grant to support the program’s emergency services. The grant money will go toward cots and CERT training for the staff at Girls Inc.
