Getting Back Up: When a disaster strikes, your recovery plan should be ready to go

Any plan is only as good as the effort you put into it, and when you’re thinking about how to get your business back up and running after a disaster, that effort needs to be considerable. In the case of cybersecurity disaster recovery, that plan needs to be thorough and comprehensive, to minimize the damage to your company, your clients, and your reputation, according to an article in Security Boulevard. To that measure, when building that plan, be sure to put that extra thought into these key items:

  • Picking the right person to lead the disaster recovery plan effort, who knows your organization’s disaster recovery needs, the key stakeholders, and who is a strong communicator
  • Identifying the key tools and resources that the various teams and departments need to perform their most critical tasks, or meet short term deadlines
  • Determining the most likely disaster scenarios, their relative severities, and how you could most effectively stop or otherwise minimize them
  • Setting up a communications plan and strategy, to best determine how you would communicate any issues with both staff and customers or clients
  • Evaluating possible responses to disaster events, whether through tests, walkthroughs, or formal or informal conversations and discussions

It’s too late if you wait for a disaster to happen before thinking about your cybersecurity recovery plan, so be sure to put that time aside as soon as possible, and save yourself some trouble.
