From Physical to Virtual: Lessons learned from the recent hurricane responses can be applied to ransomware preparedness

On the surface, hurricanes and cyberattacks don’t seem to have much in common. But while their direct effects differ greatly, the way we prepare for and respond to them does share a lot of similarities, according to an article in Security Intelligence.

Beginning with the preparation of a business continuity plan, and moving all the way through to testing and revising it, preparing for any type of disaster, whether natural or man-made, can benefit from the following tips, according to Security Intelligence:

  • Ensuring you’ve got a documented plan in place, with which your team members are familiar, to allow you to quickly start reacting.
  • Regularly testing these plans, to make sure they’re comprehensive, and people know their roles. At a time when every minute matters, you need everyone ready to do their part.
  • Having a strong communications team, capable of flowing and receiving information to and from both internal and external parties across the most effective media.

Above all, whatever the cause, you need to start preparing your plans early, and revisit them regularly, as the types of threats and appropriate responses are always changing, especially in an area as volatile as cybersecurity.
