Flexibility Under Pressure: How to ensure your IT infrastructure will support emergencies

With rapid changes to organizations’ IT needs being driven by COVID-19, IT departments have been struggling to keep up. For many, they’ve been forced to rapidly change both the nature and scale of their solutions. Specifically, within the health care sector, companies have faced challenges as solutions have been deployed to keep patients, medical professionals, and supporting staff safe, according to Health Tech Magazine.

Based on the challenges faced so far, IT leaders at various hospitals have suggested the following key ideas, in terms of ensuring a robust IT solution:

  1. Ensure your infrastructure is both mobile and scalable: This flexibility has allowed hospitals to deploy screening sites in new areas external to the building, like parking lots, or to repurpose existing internal rooms for other purposes, like intensive care bends
  2. Provide a strong framework for remote workers: By providing secure offsite access to personnel, non-critical roles can continue to perform their duties while reducing risk to all employees.
  3. Plan for both now and the future: Work on solutions that both meet immediate needs, but also allow for flexibility in the long term, as the evolving COVID-19 situation may result in quick shifts in the deployment of IT support.
