FirstNet Moves Forward

The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) has continued to progress toward the deployment of a nationwide public safety broadband network, with the Board approving key elements of the Request for Proposal, according to a FirstNet release in early October. This proposal includes details of the national approach, which will include the involvement of national and regional partnerships to build the nationwide network.

“We continue to be on time and on track with a comprehensive RFP that will meet all of our strategic objectives for public safety,” said FirstNet chair Sue Swenson in the release. “The approach we approved today provides a nationwide solution for a public safety network. It promotes speed-to-market and partnering among rural, small business, tribal, regional, and national providers.”

With the approval of the Request for Proposal, FirstNet has also released key evaluation parameters, numerous details on the interpretations of the 64 statutory provisions that will have an effect on the RFP, and a series of Public Notices seeking comment on legal issues around the proposed network.

For companies interesting in partnerships or other involvement in the development of the NPSBN, FirstNet has set up a webpage provided details on key documents and processes, including:

•Potential offeror sessions with FirstNet;

•Prioritization of requests for meetings related to the NPSBN;

•Topics vendors will address at NPSBN vendor meetings;

•Process for requesting a meeting related to the NPSBN;

•Vendor meeting requests not related to the NPSBN; and

•Partnering/teaming list.
