Fire Flight

Over decades, aviation has seen huge improvements in its safety record, resulting in it being considered the safest way to travel, and with an overall industry record that is enviable, says Dan Pippin, a 29-year veteran of the fire service. Writing for Firehouse.com, Pippin talks about how the fire service could benefit from some of the techniques and approaches adopted by the aviation industry.

Taking examples from aviation history and research, Pippin provides a discussion of such topics as crew resource management, proficiency checks, human factors analysis, and confirmation bias, among others, with frequent reference to the incidents that inspired or forced the aviation industry to take action, and to how those same changes could be used to mitigate risk within the fire service.
