Looking to update the guidelines for handling for active shooter events, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is fast tracking a new standard, as reported in Fire Chief Magazine. Only the second time in over a century that such a fast tracking has been approved by the NFPA, these guidelines have been processed as a provisional standard under the title of NFPA 3000, Standard for Preparedness and Response to Active Shooter and/or Hostile Events.
This new standard offers updates to the framework for response to these events, down to the community level, and promotes the roles civilians can have in a response to such an event. This includes investment in training of civilians, community engagement efforts, and programs similar to the First Care Providers – people who will be ready to assist before first responders can arrive on scene.
“Hostile events are happening with greater frequency and ferocity today. It’s critical that we take steps to protect people from this increasing threat,” NFPA president Jim Pauley said in a press release announcing the new standard. “By employing the unified response outlined in NFPA 3000, first responders, facility managers, hospital officials and community members can minimize risk before, during and after these devastating incidents.”
