Fashion Disaster

There’s a new type of fashion disaster, according to CNN.

The Bosai Girls were founded on March 11, 2013, on the second anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the Fukushima Daiichi power plant and surrounding area. With “Bosai” meaning “disaster prevention” in Japanese, the goal of the group was to help ensure readiness for the next emergency in Japan. While the group has been involved in conventional disaster preparedness activities, it has also encouraged nontraditional and independent thinking amount its members, with group co-founder Misaki Tanaka telling CNN, “In Japan, there are so many products and programs about disaster prevention. It’s not fun so we don’t want to do it.”

To help engage people again, Tanaka has developed a line of disaster chic products, intended to allow for stylish readiness. One of these products is a misanga, an embroidered bracelet, made out of paracord, that unravels for use as a tourniquet, shoelace, clothes line, or even a whistle. Another notable item is a new style of volunteer boots, designed to be lighter and more flexible than traditional footwear, while still being waterproof, and containing an iron plate in the sole. The Bosai Girls site also offers disaster prevention kits targeted at women, and emergency meals like potayu, a rice porridge.

While noting all are welcome at Bosai Girl events, Tanaka says the reason for the group’s creation is to support women. “Women and girls need more special support and help than men. And then, I think women and girls can help each other more kindly and they can understand sensitive problem without talking,” says Tanaka.
