Calling all home-grown inventors and entrepreneurs: your ideas on wearable tech for first responders could be the Apple watch of our industry. According to the Augusta Free Press, the first of its kind Emerge Accelerator program will make its debut on September 23 in San Francisco. A partnership between The Center for Innovative Technology and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T), the Emerge program was launched earlier this year “to engage entrepreneurs and their innovative ideas and technologies for the homeland security mission,” says the article.
Dallas-based Tech Wildcatters and Chicago-based TechNexus were selected to “discover and foster innovative individuals and companies with commercial wearable technology for first responder operations,” according to the article.
“CIT’s mission for 30 years has been to drive innovation and entrepreneurship to solve societal challenges and create new economic opportunities. This partnership with DHS S&T is a continuation of our efforts, and we are honored to be a part of their innovative procurement efforts, as they find the latest wearable technologies to help our first responders,” said Pete Jobse, CIT President and CEO, in the article.
The pilot program is calling for wearable tech ideas “inclusive of physiological sensors, high-performance materials, health support such as hydration, communications capabilities, situational awareness and similar,” according to the CIT website. “The key element is that a responder would have some portion of the system on their person during the response.”
The program is looking for startups from within the U.S.
