Farming Out Risk: How disaster management can assist the agricultural sector in robustness and recovery

Traditionally, disaster management organizations have only been involved with agriculture in a reactive manner after a natural disaster or other destructive event has already occurred. With natural disasters becoming both more frequent and more damaging, however, the opportunity for disaster management organizations to take a more proactive role in promoting planning and robustness is growing.

The area for growth is particularly notable in developing areas through South Asia, where smaller farms with limited resources with greater exposure to natural disasters are more common. To support these farms, organizations such as the International Water Management Institute work to provide resources which can map risks associated with floods, droughts, or extreme rainfalls, while also providing tools to assist in evaluating more rapid release of compensation in the event of crops being lost due to disaster. Forecasting tools also offer the ability to better identify regions which may be affected by natural disaster or extreme weather events, allowing residents to better prepare, and for more rapid deployment of recovery assistance.
