Equal Risk: A UNESCO study looks to reduce the impact of disasters on women

In both developed and developing regions, the impacts of man-made and natural disasters often fall more heavily on women, as existing gender inequalities are frequently heightened in times of insecurity, according to an article in Relief Web. Looking at the region of eastern Africa, a new report from UNESCO examines the frameworks that can lead to these increased burdens post-disaster and offers some suggestions as to how best to integrate gender-responsive actions into disaster risk reduction plans, from the extremely local levels, up to national scales.

The study also offers considerations as to the use and integration of more modern technologies in support of disaster risk reduction plans, via the integration of AI, and engagement with citizen science, with the intent of increasing resiliency, and reducing the threat of post-disaster poverty.
