Emotional strength may be the key to business longevity. In a piece for BCG, writers Cristina Lilly, Andra London and Kevin Kelley posit that a company’s biggest asset is the emotional strength of its people.
“Having an emotionally resilient workforce can speed up a transformation required to embrace change and reduce the turnover associated with it,” they write.
They describe four basic human needs that are required to develop emotional strength:
- Clarity
- Meaning
- Trust
- Belonging
By ensuring these needs are met among staff, businesses can better prepare people to handle change, whether it’s implementing new policies, restructuring teams or weathering a pandemic. This not only helps ensure a business’s planned change will succeed, but also helps reduce negative effects on employees’ performance.
