Emergency Awareness

When assembling emergency preparedness plans, there are items which are always considered and addressed. Things like emergency contacts, evacuation routes, and meeting locations are rarely omitted. However, the needs and considerations of those who require special assistance are often overlooked, leading to unnecessary risks and stresses in the event that an emergency does occur.

To that matter, many schools are including considerations that may need to be made for those with mobility impairments, or those with vision or hearing impairments. These considerations may take the form of including additional safety or alarm equipment, like fire alarms that incorporate strobe lights, or establishing areas where those requiring assistance can assemble.

Recommendations can also be found for emergency planning for the elderly, offering suggestions for recording of medications, emergency phone numbers, and suitable food and drink, so as to minimize confusions and ensure proper medical support.

Even outside of the needs of people, emergency preparedness can require consideration of animals, as the Center for Equine Health (CEH) at UC Davis in California has partnered with the International Animal Welfare Training Institute to train vets and rescue personnel for the best practices in animal rescue.
