Elected, Official

Writing in the Washington Post, Tom Donilon, chair of the President’s Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity in 2016 and national security advisor to President Barack Obama from 2010 to 2013, offers a set of five steps the United States could take to help ensure future elections aren’t susceptible to hacking from foreign or domestic attackers:

  • Acknowledge previous attacks and issue direct statements against the threat of future attacks
  • Empower the Department of Homeland Security and the Election Assistance Commission to both develop and help implement cybersecurity guidelines for elections at both the federal and state levels
  • Improve communication and information sharing between federal and state officials
  • Discuss the roles and responsibilities of social media platforms for preventing improper influence and interference in national matters
  • Work internationally to establish that attacks on election systems represent a violation of sovereignty
