East Meets West

In the aftermath of a major hack of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management in June, much speculation was made as to the source of the hack, with the U.S. government suspecting the involvement of the Chinese government. With the personal information of 21.5 million people being stolen, including access to five million sets of fingerprints, the hack was one of the largest in history, and a major source of concern to the U.S. government, due to the detailed nature of the information accessed. At the time, the Chinese government denied all involvement with any cyber-espionage between the nations.

A recent event has slightly changed that, however, as a meeting between Chinese and American national security officials has included an acknowledgement from Beijing that the attack was launched from within China, and that the Chinese government is investigating it as a criminal matter. According to the Nikkei Asian Review, this acknowledgment represents a notable change in position as — while the government is still denying involvement — it is expected that Chinese officials will begin taking more measures to address hacking performed from within Chinese borders.
