Doubling Up: The US Government activates additional resources in response to back-to-back hurricanes

Multiple natural disasters happening back-to-back can strain almost any system to its limits, but the US government is still look to deploy as much aid as possible to those who were hit by hurricanes Fiona and Ian. In an announcement on Thursday, Alejandro Mayorkas, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security stated “Today, I will be activating the DHS Surge Capacity Force so that we can bring to bear additional personnel from across the department to support disaster survivors in Florida,” indicating that the federal government would be looking to provide support to affected regions throughout the recovery.

In a separate statement, President Joe Biden said of the efforts to support Florida’s recovery from Ian, “We’ve dispatched over 1,000 FEMA personnel and pre-positioned major federal capacities and capabilities and supplies. That includes millions of liters of water, millions of meals, and hundreds—hundreds of generators.”

President Biden also reasserted federal support for Puerto Rico’s recovery from Fiona, stating “I want to be clear. To the people of Puerto Rico, we’re not going away. I am committed to you and the recovery of the island. We’ll stand by you for however long it takes to get it done.”
