Don’t Get Fooled Again: Beware of these myths when thinking about cybersecurity

It’s far too easy for disinformation to cause trouble for your organization, especially so in the field of cybersecurity, where a lack of awareness by an employee can quickly lead to disaster. Even as companies have worked to push out training to individuals working for them, certain myths have persisted, any one of which can lead to a breach, leak, hack, or generally compromise or theft of key data.

When putting together that training, make sure to not overlook these pervasive myths, as outlined in an article in Digital Journal:

  • That cybersecurity isn’t the job of everyone – as anyone can be the victim of a phishing attack, or click on a compromised link or attachment, everyone needs to be aware of basic cybersecurity rules
  • That only large businesses are targeted by hackers and cybercriminals – small businesses often make appealing targets due to lesser security resources or more informal security policies
  • That just having a password is enough to keep your accounts safe – passwords are often only delays to dedicated attackers, and things like 2FA (or MFA) can help add an extra layer of security
  • That anti-virus software alone is a proper cybersecurity defense – rather, it needs to be paired with specialized solutions to harden points of entry, secure data, and protect against ransomware attacks
  • That it’s only outside hackers that you have to worry about – instead, insiders, both intentionally or unintentionally, are an increasing common source of breaches
