Disaster vs. Data: Does your company’s IT department take large scale incidents into account?

In the rush to focus on cloud based data recovery, not to mention more sinister issues such as cybersecurity breaches and ransomware attacks, IT departments may be losing sight of more tangible threats, according to an article in TechTarget. When a natural disaster impacts power or the ability to physically access a data center, companies may be out of luck if they haven’t planned ahead.

The article points to several case studies showing different approaches to data recovery. The first company chose a cloud based data recovery system due to cost issues. According to the article, “Myron Semack, chief infrastructure architect at KCF, said building a robust data center with redundant everything, then doing the same at a separate DR location, was too cost-prohibitive.” In this case, the firm felt that there would be more warning with a natural disaster than a ransomware or other cyberattack.

The second company chose a mix of these elements, rather than just cloud-based recovery.

“If we lose our network at any time, whether it’s from a power outage, loss of ISP, fire or flood, we have a protocol in place in terms of how long we wait before we start to point everybody to the new data location,” Ron Sinopoli, CIO of James McHugh Construction Co., told TechTarget.
