Defending the High Seas: A new center at Montreal’s Polytechnique university is looking to focus on cybersecurity for maritime infrastructure

Piracy on the high seas remains a threat, and Canada’s Maritime Cyber Security Centre of Excellence hopes to be a strong force in the fight against them. Formed by multiple researchers from Montreal’s Polytechnique university, along with Neptune Cyber and Davie Shipbuilding, the centre intends to provide the shipping industry with the support necessary to build their cybersecurity capabilities, reports Global News.

“It’s time to do something, because the shipping industry is still lagging behind, technologically,” said Jeremy Citone, technological director for Neptune Cyber, to Global News. “It’s time for the shipping industry to catch up.”

With the shipping industry being increasingly connected to the Internet, as critical components like motors or navigation are to allow for remote diagnosis of problems, the number of points at which cybercriminals can access these systems has also increased. The Danish shipping company Maersk was notably hit by cybercriminals back in 2017 as the Not Petya ransomeware virus infected their systems.

“The idea is to see to what extent, with our background and our expertise, we can provide interesting solutions to make these systems resilient. The solutions we know must be adapted so they can be applied in other specific fields, such as the maritime sector,” Polytechnique professor Nora Cuppens told Global News.
