Dash It All: Operational Dashboards Offer A Focal Point For Emergency Managers

The amount of data pouring in during an emergency can be overwhelming, with location information coming from victims, first responders, observers, and anyone or anything else carrying a device capable of providing coordinates, or even from social media posts that include a location tag. To help handle this influx, emergency managers can turn to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) operational dashboards, as a method to both display and manipulate the raw and filtered information, writes Liam O’Brien, Faculty Member, Intelligence Studies at American Military University in an article from InPublicSafety.

Using these dashboards, frequently based on Esri ArcGIS software, managers can process the data into a variety of formats, displaying whatever information is relevant at that time, and mirroring it to those in the field. Whether responding to medical emergencies natural disasters, or even standard day-to-day monitoring activities, custom displays can be created to best track key metrics and coordinate activities between all involved parties, while also assisting emergency managers in making the most appropriate decisions at any time.
