An article in Forbes identifies five of the biggest trends for cybersecurity in the year ahead. Contributor Bernard Marr looks at areas from AI to vehicular hacking in terms of what to watch for in 2020.
Notable trends include how AI will play both an attack and defensive role in the cyber landscape. Marr writes that this push/pull development will become more prevalent with the development of complex systems. “Just as AI can “learn” to spot patterns of coincidence or behavior that can signal an attempted attack, it can learn to adapt in order to disguise the same behavior and trick its way past our defenses,” he writes. “This parallel development of offensive and defensive capabilities will become an increasingly present theme as AI systems become more complex and, importantly, more available and simpler to deploy.”
Marr also identifies skills gaps in cybersecurity fields, which will lead to both the inability to identify these attacks and also how to defend against them. He also sees increasing technological advances in areas such as auto manufacturing leading to increased vulnerabilities, much like the ways that hackers can exploit smart home technology.
