The World Economic Forum has released a new document offering details on how to best manage challenges imposed by cybersecurity threats. Intended to provide a set of tenets which executives and organizational leaders can use to guide their company’s cybersecurity path, this publication also recommends the development of a strong cybersecurity culture.
This development of a strong cybersecurity culture is critical. Although many technical aspects of cybersecurity can be managed by a central team, it is difficult to protect against the failures of individuals who may not understand the risks they’re taking. Among the risks that can be reduced by encouraging a strong cybersecurity culture are:
- Poor password hygiene, including re-using or sharing login credentials
- Breaches caused by phishing or social engineering attacks
- Exposure of data through lack of encryption
Organizations can help develop this culture of cybersecurity by taking the following steps:
- Add training sessions throughout the year designed to tackle issues in an engaging manner, rather than only performing a once-yearly training requirement
- Provide multiple tools for employees to report cybersecurity concerns
- Create incentives to reward positive cybersecurity behaviors
- Demonstrate that leadership understands the importance of cybersecurity
