Culture Shock: Working to build an organization-wide focus on cybersecurity can greatly reduce risk

An employee disengaged from cybersecurity represents a big risk to a company. In many cases, hacks and breaches are caused by those who are unaware, out of touch, or otherwise disinterested in the importance of cybersecurity, or even the fundamental rules around it.

To help get those people better involved and keep those who are already engaged in best practices up to speed, companies need to emphasize their organization’s cybersecurity workplace culture, according to an article in InfoSecurity Magazine.

While not always an easy thing to do, building a strong cybersecurity culture can pay big benefits, and reduce the threat of incidents that could expose the company to embarrassment, or legal and financial hardships.

When working on building your workplace culture, InfoSecurity Magazine warns companies to:

  • Evaluate employee awareness of cybersecurity
  • Understand the specific risks to your company
  • Clearly communicate the major cybersecurity concepts
  • Set clear cybersecurity goals and policies
  • Lead by example
