Cloud Chasing: Care needs to be taken when building a disaster recovery plan for hybrid cloud environments

While cloud environments have become a mainstay in business continuity, some companies have found themselves in situations where, through need or through legacy, they instead have to maintain a hybrid cloud environment, mingling public cloud environments with private infrastructure. In such a situation, an article in IT Pro recommends that companies need to carefully consider how to best handle their disaster recovery needs, focusing on:

  • Limited scalability of infrastructure, with respect to on-premises servers
  • Challenges in data transfer speeds on restoration, as backups need to be moved across the Internet, rather than only with a closed environment
  • Concerns with respect to data privacy, to ensure security requirements are maintained
  • Reduced options for data backup and recovery tools, as many venders assume a single environment, rather than a hybrid one

While solutions can be found that will get you back on your feet after a disruption, care does need to be taken to ensure that your solution is both rapid and robust.
