Climbing the Hill: What lessons can private organizations take from the riot at the US Capitol?

As the nation prepared to inaugurate Joseph R. Biden Jr. as the next president, tensions and security in Washington and around the country have been at an all time high. The riots on the Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021 brought about unprecedented change to the US government and the long lasting effects on the areas of security and defense remains to be seen.

In Homeland Security Today, David Pounder, director of threat and risk analysis at Gate 15 and an information security officer at a financial organization, writes about the lessons learned that day and how companies can readjust its culture and structures to adjust to new realities. Pounder covers two areas of risk—disinformation and rules of engagement—and steps that organizations can take to address these issues.

He suggests the following:

  • Examining incidents as a lessons learned exercise
  • Looking at threat sources
  • Identifying your organization’s rules of engagement
  • Training employees on disinformation and how to identify it
  • Ensuring there is reporting and education around extremist ideology.
