With climate change being a source of concern for nations worldwide, the G7 has commissioned a report that has identified seven climate-fragility risks that may pose threats to states in the coming years.
Covering issues from increased competition for local resources to extreme weather events and disasters, or even unintended effects of climate policies, the report attempts to define the major issues these states may face, and the threats to stability of government, and populace, as well as the interaction between the different possible risks.
The report also offers suggestions for addressing both the individual risks, as well as three key policy approaches to assist nations in developing resilience to these threats:
•Climate change adaptation
•Development and humanitarian aid
•Peacebuilding
In support of these policies, and to ensure and assist in their adaptation, the New Climate for Peace report offers four recommendations for future action: that nations make climate-fragility risks a central part of foreign policy, that the G7 enhance cooperation between nations, that greater integration between processes and structures be implemented, and that engagement be managed at both the global and local levels.
