Clear as Mud: A lack of transparency in cybersecurity has often left organizations struggling to understand new threats

Based on the discussions of a recent panel of security leaders with Intel, organizations should be able to benefit from increased transparency in their cybersecurity practices, according to an article in Security Magazine. Beginning with referencing the dangers caused by overly siloed organizations, the panel also discussed the importance of reaching outside your organization, to all forms of security researchers. Said Katie Noble, Director of Intel’s Product Security Incident Response Team and Bug Bounty, to Security Magazine, “When I say security researchers, I don’t just mean professional security researchers… [I mean] all the way to hackers in questionable places, doing questionable things. I don’t care what someone’s motivation is, I care about the technology and securing the technology.”

Says Amit Elazari, Director of Global Cybersecurity Policy for Intel, about the importance of external collaborations to Security Magazine, “This concept of being able to receive reports from external researchers and handling it internally… is a fundamental security capability.”

Outside of the issue of transparency, the panel also discussed the importance of both inclusion and diversity within the cybersecurity industry, noting that women only make up 24% of cybersecurity professionals. Said Maggie Jaurequi, Offensive Security Researcher, of the need to recruit more women into the field, “If you are a creative person, if you like arts and crafts, if you’re good at attention to detail, which I think a lot of women are, then maybe you’d like hardware security, and you haven’t even thought about it.”
