Chatting it Up: ChatGPT looks to be both an aid and a threat to cybersecurity

ChatGPT has been in the news a lot lately, as different industries examine how its availability could help or harm them in their efforts. In particular, with the revelation that it can generate code upon request, those working in or against the field of cybersecurity have been studying it carefully, to see exactly what its capabilities may be. Already, concerns are being raised as to whether the tool would allow inexperienced hackers to exploit weaknesses in cybersecurity defenses, with proponents of the tool also noting more positively that it may also be of use in helping to automate portions of the work required for a robust cyber defense, according to an article in CRN.

At the moment, various areas have been identified where the work of ChatGPT could be a boon or threat to cyber security activities, including:

  • Security incident analysis, where the capabilities of ChatGPT could allow for offloading of the initial investigation, and establishing a basic understanding of the incident’s causes and extent
  • Easier generation of malware tools by bad actors, either by creating variants designed to evade anti-virus tools or generating malicious payloads
  • Allowing for the rapid production of customized or convincing messages for phishing or social engineering attacks, using the tools greatly improved understanding of natural sounding language
  • Automation of cybersecurity testing activities, and other critical but repetitive tasks
