Changing the Game: The introduction of ChatGPT is already impacting cybersecurity

ChatGPT is changing the face of many industries, from publishing to programming, and it and other AI technology may also have huge impacts on the world of cybersecurity as well. An article in Forbes by security company Inversion6 chief technology officer Christopher Prewitt points to some areas that are already being affected.

Prewitt points to search engines as replaceable by AI technology, due to its way of using natural language processing for an interactive conversational exploration with the user. Although research using AI tools may not currently be ready for prime time, as the technology learns and grows, the future may be very different.

Where Prewitt sees potential is in operational functions (assisting human operators) or in both detecting and launching cyberattacks. “Many hackers already specialize in specific attack types such as social engineering or phishing campaigns,” writes Prewitt. “In time, AI will help them automate large portions of their workflow and exploit vulnerabilities within a few hours of their discovery instead of a few days.” A National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) AI Risk Management Framework is currently underway to develop best practices and risk avoidance for AI.
