Centralized Disaster Data: DesignSafe, a database of natural disaster information, is changing how planners and policymakers think about preparation and response

Researchers at the University of Texas have spent the last five years assembling a database of natural disaster information, intended to act as a forum where data sets can be published in a manner similar to journals, according to an article on Phys.org.

Funded by a grant from the NSC, which has been renewed for another five years, the database goes by the name of DesignSafe, and contains almost 300 published data sets available to the 5,000 users, with hundreds more being stored privately. This unified database is intended to provide detailed imagery and information, to allow researchers, engineers, and legislators to better understand the effect of previous disasters and plan for future ones.

Says Ellen Rathje, a professor at the Cockrell School of Engineering’s Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering and lead researcher for DesignSafe, “We’ve watched the path from research to data to the real world, where information on the platform is informing how people do things like design structures. Our data repository is helping paint a more complete picture of natural hazards and helping the world understand their impacts.”
