Both Sides of the Business: Companies often overemphasize IT recovery after a disaster

When it comes to disaster recovery plans, too many companies focus on IT to the detriment of other areas of business continuity, such as the operational elements, according to an article in Information Week.

The article, written by president of Transworld Data Mary E. Shacklett. identifies six elements that should be considered in terms of a disaster recovery plan.

  • Updates: New office conditions such as working from home mean that companies should revisit their existing plans due to external demands on the IT structure.
  • Multiple backups: Using more than one network and vendor allows for redundancy in case of network overflow or failure.
  • Personnel management: In case of loss of team members, grief counsellors and reduced expectations may be needed, as well as other employees who are trained to be able to accomplish tasks as needed.
  • Business continuity: A focus on resuming business operations, such as communicating plans of action to stakeholders to reassure them, is crucial in disaster recovery.
  • Coordination: Ensuring all team members, from senior to junior staff, are on message when it comes to speaking to the media and customers.
  • Vendors: Ensure your vendors also have disaster recovery plans in place so that they are not your weak link.
